I am an experienced, qualified and accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist offering 1:1 therapy within a safe and confidential therapeutic relationship. I also offer supervision for anyone working with adults who want to reflect on and develop their skills and practice, whether newly qualified or experienced.
Sometimes areas of life such as work or family can feel challenging and overwhelming or we may experience traumatic events that leave us feeling overwhelmed, distressed or isolated. Sometimes our relationships with others or ourselves leave us feeling alone or we may be struggling to live our lives in a way that feels meaningful or rewarding. Therapy can help you to understand the impact events are having on you and to learn more helpful ways of dealing with them. Change can often feel quite challenging. I bring all my therapy experience along with an attitude of acceptance, compassion and empathy to help you to develop an understanding of how your problems may have developed and are being maintained and then support you in making the changes that you desire .
CBT
CBT focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behaviours and can help you to build confidence, success and happiness by addressing unhelpful thought patterns and behaviour patterns . A crucial CBT concept is that thoughts, attitudes and beliefs that you hold about yourself, other people and life situations can have a huge effect on your emotional wellbeing. Sometimes the meanings that we give to events, ourselves or others can lead to difficulties such as anxiety, depression and low self esteem.
We can get into patterns of worrying or self-critical thinking that can make us feel hopeless, anxious or worthless. By identifying these unhelpful thinking styles that contribute to distressing emotions, CBT can provide you with skills to learn more helpful and realistic ways of thinking and managing these emotions. CBT is a collaborative process and we work together to help you to identify goals and develop self-awareness. Unhelpful thoughts and behaviours are identified and replaced with helpful strategies. You will learn how to change your response to negative thoughts and feelings. CBT is a therapy that requires your active participation and an important part is working on tasks between sessions agreed between us as that is how change is made. CBT has been evidenced to be effective for a wide variety of problems including depression, anxiety, OCD, low self esteem, anger, pain, addiction, lack of confidence and stress. The length of therapy will depend on your circumstances, but CBT usually lasts for between 8-16 sessions.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. Francine Shapiro developed EMDR in 1987, utilising this natural process in order to successfully treat Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Since then, EMDR has been used to effectively treat a wide range of mental health problems. EMDR is a therapy that utilises the natural healing ability of your body to process distressing memories, especially those related to past trauma, by using bilateral stimulation, often in the form of guided eye movements. The goal is to reduce the emotional distress associated with these traumatic memories so that they feel less painful and intense. This linking of related memories can lead to a dramatic and rapid improvement in many aspects of your life. It has been evidenced to show effectiveness in the treatment of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, stress, phobias, sleep problems, complicated grief, addictions, pain relief, self-esteem and performance anxiety. My aim is to help you to make the changes that you feel are important to lead a more fulfilling life. I have over 18 years’ experience, knowledge and training within a wide range of settings including NHS, drug and alcohol services and therapeutic community all of which inform my practice and help me to provide a service to best meet your needs. I offer both long and short-term therapy for individuals from the age of 18 and above.
